Appearance:
Kael is a rather average for a kid his age, the only major difference between him and most of his peers is that Kael looks slightly younger than most seventeen year old kids and most believe he is at most sixteen. The male has medium length blond hair that juts out at every odd angle, amber eyes that are usually dull with disinterest but come alive when around unique pokemon. The boy's features are slender, yet slightly rounded giving him a likable face yet does not make him look extremely attractive. Still, many have said that his face makes him look forever honest so Kael is happy with it.
Although he looks rather average Kael's life at his father's ranch has lead the teen to becoming rather fit. Of course this does not mean that he is by any means toned or muscle bound, but rather the boy is lithe like a runner would be. There is a long yet shallow scar that runs up the right side of male’s ribcage. The scar is one that he has lived with since his childhood so Kael is rather used to it, but is annoyed when people focus on it too much.
Kael always wears a black bandana with an orange nine on it to keep his unruly hair in place. Beyond that the teenage boy normally wears a tan jacket with black stripes running up the arm and across the collar that is just thick enough to keep out the cold, but is not stifling, a orange or brown tee-shirt, regular blue jeans and black tennis shoes. Over his shoulder is always slung a small grey bag filled to the brim with the random assortment of the teen's interest.
Personality:
Kael is a strangely content teenager, not often does he complain about being bored nor being annoyed with how his life is going. Instead the kid generally just seems to go with the flow, a far away smile decorating his face as he does. Although he is content with how things are the seventeen year old isn't exactly interested in it all, instead he is just disinterested, having no strong opinion on really anything.
When dealing with others the teen has a habit of being oddly calm. Even when insulted the boy seems to keep his cool and just take it all in. Other than his oddly calm demeanor the male is generally rather kind towards people, always offering a smile and a helping hand to whomever may need it. Despite this the boy is often avoided or disliked because he has a habit of telling the truth to a degree that he can hurt people's feelings easily. Kael does not do this with the intention to harm, but instead he believes that being honest is the best way for him to help others.
The only things that seem to break the kid from this annoyingly content take on life is girls, and those who treat him like a child or otherwise act as if Kael is somehow inferior. Girls have a tendency to fluster the teenage boy, since he was home schooled and lived on a ranch a few miles from any town Kael has had no experience with females of any kind. Of course the boy tries his best when dealing with the opposite gender, but always seems to be slightly off.
Kael has come to have an odd obsession with writing and reading. The male spends most of his time trying to write a novel, or reading classical literature. Try as he night it seems that the male has no talent for writing, his stories always end up a bit bland and generic. Kael fears that this is because he lacks experience with most of what life offers. This is the reason that he has decided to become a pokemon trainer, so that he can see all that life experiences. Because of he want to write a good book the teen will do just about anything no matter how dangerous it is.
Pokemon:
Mankey-Renji
Level:
5
Move List:
-Low kick
-Scratch
-Fury Swipes
-Reversal(egg move)
Pokemon Personality:
Mankey is a very happy and energetic pokemon. The pokemon is constantly trying to play with whomever he finds interesting. When people refuse to play with the mankey he often times pulls pranks on them or will pout until they appease his need to be amused.
Despite this rather childish attitude the pokemon is actually very loyal and will do anything for those that treat him properly. The pokemon would likely give his life for someone he trusted enough. But if you betray his trust Renji is likely to forever forsake you and won't even play with you.
History:
Gareth Templar was born a city boy, in the greatest of all cities in Johto, Goldenrod. Of course Goldenrod offered many splendors, things that small towns could only dream of or in some cases couldn't dream of. Yet at the same time living in the city had its down sides. Gareth's father, Kevin, was one of those down sides. Kevin worked as a bookie for almost anything that you could bet on and often times brought some of his shady associates home with him. Gareth's mother, Amy, always protested and tried to keep the house clean of that kind of person, but Kevin paid the bills and paid little heed to his wife's woes.
For young Gareth these people were frightening, yet so very intriguing. With all their muscles and anger came such fascinating stories. After the six-year-old was able to get over his fear of the scarred men and women the boy began to try and get from them the tales of their misadventures. Of course at first Amy was very much against this, but she was yet again overruled by a rather authoritative Kevin. The man liked that his son was taking an interest in his life, perhaps this is because he felt almost justified in his dirty work if a child could find it so great.
Although Kevin had not paid much attention to his young son before now the man suddenly began to take Gareth under his wing. He began to take his boy with him on minor jobs, normally just setting up bets or occasionally to pick up money owed to him by people he knew would pay. Even Kevin knew that he would lose the love and respect of his son if he showed the boy just how dark Goldenrod's street's could get. Gareth took to watching his father at work, and loved watching how powerful his father was. What six year old didn't want to see their daddy ruling over everyone he met.
Amy of course was completely opposed to having her only child exposed to the underworld of the city. The woman frequently protested when Kevin would leave the house with a bright eyed Gareth in his arms. The man often either ignored her or told her that it was none of her business. The woman soon realized that her voice would not be heard for her husband’s ears had become deaf to her wants. In an attempt to help Gareth retain his innocence the mother would often take him to the mall or a movie when she knew Kevin would be going to "work" soon.
This worked for a short time, but eventually the man began to catch on. No matter how much Amy said that it was coincident her husband knew the truth, after all he spent almost every day surrounded by liars a hundred times better than the housewife. Finally Kevin had to ask, "Are you trying to keep my son from me? Are you ashamed of what keeps you alive?" Amy replied in kind, "Yes. I don't want my son to live the life you lead, I don't want him to have to look over his shoulder in fear that his deeds will come back for him." With that the woman left the house with their son.
Like all women that are fighting with their spouse Amy went to her mother's house. Gareth of course thought nothing of the visit at first, he figured that his daddy would be busy with work and would come to visit Granny soon. Yet that was not what happened, and after the third week the young boy began to ask where his father was. Amy with sad eyes always replied, "I've asked myself that for a long time." Then would not allow any further speak of the topic. To a six year old this was rather difficult to deal with and young Gareth often threw fits and fought with his mother.
Then on the fifth week of their stay at Granny's house Kevin made his appearance. At first it was a small conversation between the two parents, but then it turned into a fight. Kevin did not care if Amy came home, for that was her own choice that she alone should deal with, but she had no right to take Gareth from him. Yet the woman adamantly fought him saying that she was protecting the child from the life that Kevin lead. Although Kevin was used to hurting people he could not bring himself to hurt Amy so he left without any further argument.
Two weeks later divorce papers found themselves in Amy's hands. The woman was nearly destroyed by this, although she knew that it in the end was her choice it still hurt to know that Kevin could end it so easily. Despite that the woman signed the papers, knowing that it was for Gareth's sake that she was doing it. Soon after the divorce was finalized Kevin managed to get shared custody of Gareth. In the end all of Amy's efforts to separate her son from Kevin's life were useless, now even if she tried to interfere she would be unable to.
As Gareth grew he spent a great deal of time with his father. Kevin was happy that his son looked up to him, and a growing Gareth appreciated the power that his dad held over the lives of others along with the money that came with it. Of course Amy continued to fret about the situation, but was powerless to change it. Each day she dropped off her son at Kevin's house the woman had to regret her choice to leave the man, or even marrying him in the first place. It seemed that as time went on she lost Gareth bit by bit until he was no longer hers to hold.
When the boy turned fifteen Kevin finally sucked him into the world his mother had fought so hard to keep from him. Now Gareth worked with his father, collecting money owed to Kevin, and punishing those that served best as examples. The teenager of course knew that what he was doing was gravely wrong, but found that he loved the power that came along with the lack of moral fiber. Now when Gareth was respected and feared by people twenty or even thirty years his senior, he loved it.
Amy still tried to save her son, but the boy was no longer a six year old that she could run away to her mother's house with, yet the woman still wished she could solve her problem that way. Gareth loved his mother, but saw her as more of a nuisance more than anything else, she was constantly nagging him about what he was doing for his father. Through this "nagging" Amy was able to make the teenager agree to at least stay in school and graduate, rather than leaving as soon as he could for the world that was Kevin's.
Thanks to his mother Gareth did graduate high school, but he did not go on to a university in search of a career, but instead he continued to help his father with his now rather successful gambling ring. Oh course his mother was opposed to this choice, but it had been a long time since Gareth had truly heard what she'd said. Like Kevin Gareth had learned that it was easier to continue doing what he knew was wrong if he didn't listen to the voices that told him the truths he'd known all along.
For many years Gareth continued this business that preyed upon the weakness that was innate to so many members of humanity. He lived a nice life because of it, had a large four bedroom apartment to himself, dated beautiful women and was able to afford countless trips to anywhere he wanted. It was all thanks to Kevin's smarts. Who knew that someone could fund such a lucrative business on people trying to win one another's money?
Kael's mother, Lenne, lived a life so very different from the one that Gareth lead, yet their two worlds seemed to mingle so often. Unlike Gareth Lenne did not live a life with a protective mother and a wealthy father. Rather she was born into a house with six other children that had come before her, each one straining the collective wallet to it's limits.
Lenne's father, Nathan, was a strong man that worked hard for his money, and slightly resented his children that were responsible for much of it leaving his callused hands. So occasionally the man filled those hands with alcohol and taught his children that nothing in life was truly free, and their payment for their food and stay would be their happiness. Although the beatings were not too hard they lasted a while and were enough to send many of the young ones into crying fits.
Lenne's mother, Catharine, was just as hard working as her husband, but did not feel the need to take out her anger on the little ones that siphoned away her hard earned money. No, the woman had other ways to vent, instead of taking hands against her young she would take her hands to the laps of other men. Of course Nathan was not completely obvious to this fact, but could not address it for fear that the woman would leave him to handle the children by himself so the man vented more anger on the little ones that ate away at his finances.
Growing up in a house of seven was difficult by it self, but when neither parent tried playing an active role in became that much more difficult. Lenne of course had to fight the hardest since she was the youngest of the seven, and by far the weakest. All the children were rather cruel to one another, but in their cruelty was a longing for love or at least some form of attention. So the siblings did not act vicious toward one another just to hurt one another, it was so that they would hurt less.
Once Lenne hit the age of seven she realized that all of her brothers and sisters were only attacking each other with the thought that pain was a finite resource, thus the more you gave out the less you would have to endure on your own. Once this was known, it became obvious the course of action that the little girl had to take, she had to show all of those around her that even amidst pain you can retain happiness. So no matter what cruel pranks her siblings pulled on her the bright eyed girl would just turn a smile on them, letting them see that no matter how much pain they gave her their own would not lessen.
Of course at first this did not drive the other children off, instead it made her a target. When you pose a challenge to a group of kids they gladly try to meet it, and almost always put their all toward this goal. So for a time Lenne became the single target of six childrens' frustration. Yet no matter how much she was humiliated or hurt the girl would just smile as if the whole world were perfect. For all that children love a challenge they do not have much for attention spans and tend to give up after a short time.
When the girl turned ten the house was blessed with an ease of the finances, her two oldest siblings fled the home in search for a life that did not involve drunken fists or spiteful glances. The two had decided to get an apartment together so that they could afford living without having to worry too much about financial poverty. Thanks to their decision life grew easier on all of the house's children, the rooms were less cramped, there were less to share food with, Nathan was happier, and even Catharine began to show up at home a little more often. They were by no means happy, but they were considerably less miserable.
In the next two years one more sibling left the house, making it now comfortable to live in for it's six inhabitants. Nathan began to spend money on toys, clothes and such for his children. Now that her life was a little better the smiles that lived upon Lenne's face became ones that were real, and not just coping mechanisms. The preteen began to see life as the beautiful place that she had always pretended it was. No longer living a lie the youngster was able to become someone real, with unique interest and thoughts all her own.
Within the next year something horrible happened. The two older siblings of Lenne's that had three years prior left home ended up dead. It turned out that the two had been dealing drugs out of their home so that they could make the rent, and had foolishly tried to deny a junkie his fix. When the police found the bodies they were hardly recognizable, the only reason that the police could be sure it was the siblings was dental records and finger prints. The junkie was found a few days later, he too was dead, but his death was self inflicted. Even the distant family felt the weight of the deaths, and all mourned the loss.
The lives that her siblings lead began to make Lenne think about her own future. How would she afford to live? What would she have to do just to survive on a day to day basis? Would she too end up being a corpse for Nathan and Catharine to cry over? These thoughts were greatly disturbing the thirteen-year-old. She did not want to end up as another statistic, or a few lines in the obituaries. So even at this young age the girl began to make a plan for her future, a way to escape the fate that was her family's. She would grow into a success, and would not let herself falter even once.
So over the next five years the girl worked tirelessly during school, making sure that her grades were second to none and that her record remained flawless. Despite this frantic working Lenne did not let herself lose the smile that had been borne to her when she was seven. Instead she made the grin grow, and made sure that not once would she allow it to slip into a grimace or frown. So with optimism and a quick mind the girl progressed through school, making friends and perfect grades every where that she went.
Once Lenne graduated she of course went on to college, the girl planned to become a psychologist and try to help people solve the problem in their lives before they were ruined by not dealing with the problems. College was a bit harder than high school had been, but the woman found that she was naturally good at it since she was forever positive and always found a way to press forward. The next eight years working for a doctorate while working part time and having to retain a A average to keep all her scholarships was difficult, but at the same time it was all the more rewarding when she was able to grip the diploma in her hands and see the strangely happy smiles it brought to her parents' faces.
When she was finally out of college Lenne decided to move from Kanto, to Johto where she was sure there would be interesting people and many adventures to be had. For the first time in her life the woman's parents did something for her without any prompting or begrudging eyes. The two handed over a check for ninety thousand dollars(which is a lot in the pokemon world, but not as much as it is IRL) so that the girl would be able to live life without working so hard. At least for a while. The money was a combination of what the two had been saving up for retirement, so it wasn't a major dent in their wallet. With tears on her eyes Lenne watched the two disappear as the train in Saffron City brought her to a new life.
When the woman got into Goldenrod City and was finally settled down into her new apartment the first thing that Lenne did was get a part time job at a diner close to home. Despite her parents wanting her to "take it easy" the girl knew that the money they'd given her would not last forever, plus she was not used to not working. The people that owned the diner were a nice middle aged couple that used to diner to fund their small bookstore that was not doing as well. The two were generous and understanding most the time, and never made their employees do too much work but never let them just slack off. In truth it was a place the Lenne loved working despite the fact that the pay wasn't amazing.
After her fourth week working at the small diner a man began to eat there alone every night. He was handsome enough and always seemed sociable and kind whenever Lenne served him. Soon the two began to talk a lot whenever he came in. The man was name Gareth Templar, apparently he worked for his father's business. Whenever the woman brought that up and asked what the business did Gareth often changed the subject or simply left saying that he had to get to work. After two months of his visits the two began to date, Gareth was smart and caring, and Lenne's happy go lucky attitude was great for him since he had a habit of slipping into a depressing silence.
After the fourth month of the two becoming a couple Gareth appeared at Lenne's door, his shirt covered in blood so clearly not his own, his face stained with tears, and his eyes sunken into a deep despair. The man told her the truth of who he was and what he did, how he was a bookie for his father's gambling ring. That night he and his father were supposed to be picking up some money owed to them, the guy they were getting it from was rather stable and thus they did not bring any muscle to help them out. When the two got to his doorway Gareth heard a sound and turned just in time to see his father stabbed. The man that stabbed Kevin Templar was the son of one of their former clients, he attacked Kevin to avenge his father's suicide.
That night the son who had so loved his father had to watch the man die in his arms. For days Gareth stayed at Lenne's, his body racked with the pain of self hate, and his mind lost within loss. After nearly a week the man was able to break free from his stupor, he decided that he was going to leave Goldenrod and the death of the city streets and find his own happiness outside of the town. The man had plenty of money to do this easily, so he invited the woman he knew he loved to join him and help him lead a better life. Against her best judgment Lenne decided to come, believing that together the two could build a future filled with smiles.
When they left town neither of the two knew what they wanted to do, but they drove to the country-side in search of something that would work as a reprieve from the big city. Neither one expected much but the two went anyways. Yet once Lenne and Gareth saw a small ranch a few miles from Olivine the couple could not tear themselves from it. The original owners were selling it because they had no children to pass it on to. So without a second thought Gareth signed a check and took the ranch into his own hands. Here he could build a future.
For two years the couple worked hard to fix up the ranch that could not be properly maintained by the old couple that had owned it. They read countless books on pokemon breeding and how to run a ranch, and although that was not enough the two still worked hard alongside one another, smiling the whole time. After much trial and error the couple was able to open their ranch and begin breeding pokemon. Almost as if to reward to two for their tireless work and patience Lenne found out she was pregnant two weeks after the ranch opened for business.
For Lenne being pregnant was both an amazing blessing and an even bigger annoyance. Whenever she tried to help out around the ranch, or even do household chores a paranoid Gareth would always stop her, saying that it could strain the baby. Of course Lenne knew that he was trying to be a good husband and father to be, but when a person was told what they could and could not do they generally got annoyed. So the couple often got into fights withing these nine months. Although they were agitated neither one was really angry, so nothing came from the arguments, but they did manage to result in many awkward days.
When Lenne went into labor Gareth was a wreck, trying his best to act calm, comfort his wife and get her to the closest hospital on time. When the two arrived at the hospital Lenne was rushed away from Gareth by a flock of doctors. For hours the man sat in the waiting room, wondering how everything was going, and who his child would be. To pass the time the man thought about how he and Lenne would raise the child, how they would keep it away from the cities since those birthed so many sorrows and how they would teach the child how to run the ranch some day.
So lost in thought was Gareth that he did not notice the doctor standing in front of him until four minutes had gone by. Even once the man had noticed the doctor the two stayed silent for sometime. Gareth fearing bad news he was now certain was coming, and the young doctor fearing the horrible news she knew she'd soon give. After much time had passed the doctor finally broke the two's silence, "There were complications with the birth. Since you were not actually married with Lenne and she was fully conscious she was the one to legally make any choices that might occur. When we told her that we would have to make a decision that could either improve her chances of living, or that of your child's she decided to let the baby be the one to live. I'm sorry, but Lenne is dead. Her last decision was to name the baby Kael, she said that she'd always liked that name."
When the doctor finished her speech her eyes with overflowing with tears and her body shook violently, "I'm so sorry that I couldn't save her. So, so, so sorry." When the woman finally looked up at Gareth again he saw that beyond those tears was so much regret and sorrow. So the man who had lost all he'd ever loved pulled this woman who he did not know into a hug. Breaking past his own pain Gareth decided to comfort this young woman, and help her past Lenne's death. After all, that is what his wife would have wanted.
The doctor's name was Hanna Garis. The woman had only gotten her license two years prior to Lenne's death and was a very good doctor despite her inexperience. For a doctor death is something that will be a part of their lives and they should accept that as soon as possible to make life easier on themselves, yet Hanna had yet to have a patient die on her so Lenne's death was one that affected the twenty-eight year old deeply. As per Gareth's request the doctor came with the man to Lenne's funeral.
After his "wife's" death Gareth devoted himself into raising Kael to the fullest extent of his ability. Many thought that the man would feel that his son had robbed him of Lenne, but the truth was that the man felt that his son was Lenne's last gift to him and he intended to take care of it. Yet for a single father raising a child while running a ranch was something that was nigh impossible, it felt like Gareth had to be in six places at a time. Frantically the man would run back and forth between hungry pokemon, and a crying babe, constantly trying to keep up with the many demands of his life.
Despite how difficult life was for Gareth he followed the path that his late wife had shown him and bore it all with a grin and a positive attitude. In truth if not for Lenne's oddly happy attitude the man would not have known how to survive his life and would have given up as soon as he realized what a chore raising Kael would be. After surviving the first year of parenting on Kael's first birthday and the anniversary of Lenne's death the man got a visitor from one of the people that he would never have suspected. Hanna Garis, the doctor that had mourned Lenne's death so severely.
Hanna had decided to come to the Lanart ranch to see Lenne's legacy, and to apologize to Gareth for having him comfort her in his time of need. The doctor ended spending half of her time playing with the baby Kael, who despite being only one was a very happy and energetic baby. As her visit drew on the woman found that she rather liked the small ranch, the pokemon there were very friendly, and she felt like the place could be a home away from home for anyone who was willing to get their hand's dirty. So before the woman left she asked Gareth if she would be allowed to visit every so often to help out with Kael and the ranch. Of course the man who was so overworked agreed to this request.
At first Hanna tried not to smother the widow with her presence and the sad memories that came with it so she'd appear only once or twice a month to play with baby Kael and some of the more docile of the ranch's pokemon. Then slowly the doctor found herself being sucked into the pleasant place so far from most of society's woes and worries. Hanna began to visit every weekend, watching Kael when Gareth was too busy and helping out with the pokemon when the father needed to spend some time with his son. Within the next year Hanna asked to take a permanent position on the ranch as Gareth's assistant, and Kael's nanny/ physitician.
At first Gareth was skeptical. It seemed that the now thirty year old Hanna was getting ready to give up all of her future because the guilt of a death which was not her doing. How could he allow this woman to throw away her career, social life and friends just so that life would be a little bit easier on him. So for a while the man told Hanna no. Yet over and over again the girl would ask for a permanent position, not just some random helper for the weekends. What finally made the man accept this extremely generous offer was Hanna quitting her job and selling her house, then appearing at the ranch saying that if he did not give her the position then she was leaving Johto.
Despite being twenty eight years Kael's senior the woman ended up being more of a sister figure to the growing boy than that of a mother, an aunt or even a friend. As the lad grew he became a very relaxed child, calm to the point where just his presence was soothing, and kind to the extent that many could not imagine him ever doing harm. It was almost as if Kael learning to mirror his environment, and was becoming the physical manifestation of the ranch. Hanna enjoyed being around the boy, and teaching him almost anything he asked about. The lad seemed so much more mature than most children his age that Hanna began to treat him as older and the two spent much time together.
Gareth loved his son and by the time the child turned seven he decided that he would not allow the world to taint the mind of his boy. So the man began to shelter the boy, making sure that no negative influence could ever come close to the precious child of Lenne. It got to the point where the screening process to work at the Lanart ranch often took at least a month to finish and even then Gareth would carefully watch all new employees. Kael noticed his father's obsession with keeping him from the outside world at a young age. At first the boy was extremely annoyed and considered "running away" like many young children do, but eventually the boy began to accept it as a part of his life. It wasn't as if Gareth was hurting him by sheltering him, so what good would it do to fight the system?
As he grew the boy became rather content. That is not to say that he was happy, but rather was very accepting of his lot in life and the bad things that happened in the world. This alarmed both Hanna and Gareth, if the boy became this way when he was older it'd make sense and would be something to be happy about since most teenagers become cynical not content. Yet Kael was only ten and was devoid of both ambition or interest in anything. The two feared that the boy would become utterly dispassionate about life if he continued this way. Hanna often asked the boy why he was so content and he'd always answer, "Because it's easiest."
To try to make the child become slightly more interested in life Gareth decided to have him start helping around the ranch. Until now the man had been so afraid for his child's well being that he would not let Kael do the tough work that came with helping around the now large and busy breeding ranch. The ten year old took to helping the pokemon rather quickly, he wasn't exactly excited about working with the animals, but he definitely enjoyed it which was a large step in the right direction. Kael was good with pokemon, his calm personality and understanding eyes seemed to make the pokemon trust him more than most and they flocked to the boy whenever he was nearby.
Gareth was extremely pleased with how well accepted Kael was by the pokemon on the ranch. Most of the new pokemon did not trust the ranch hands, or anyone when they arrived yet whenever the blond haired boy neared they seemed to release much of their anger and fear and became pleasant beneath the child's gentle hands. Because of this odd ability Gareth trusted his son to handle even the most feral pokemon that the ranch received. This lead to an accident that would make the already overprotective Gareth become much more protective of his young son. This mistake would make the man question his worth as a father and person.
One day when the ranch took in a syther that at one point had a abusive trainer young Kael went to calm down the pokemon. At first the syther was doubtful but came around and allowed the child to gently pet and feed it. The pokemon became very relaxed next to the boy who patiently sat by it, wanting nothing from it. Then as the boy got up to leave the pokemon's cage the syther head a large bang from outside and quickly, without thought attacked the young boy. The pokemon came to it's senses after only one cut, but that was enough to do much damage to the kind boy. The cut was along Kael's rib cage and had even cut into a few of the bones. If not for Hanna's quick thinking the boy could have been severely injured.
For a fair amount of time the child was hospitalized. The wound cut deep and did enough damage that the doctors wanted to be sure that it didn't do any permanent damage to the boy's muscles or bones. Luckily after a month Kael was fine and was simply warned not to make any sudden movements for a while because the wound could reopen. The child of course held no grudges against his father or the syther for what happened, but rather was worried that the pokemon might have been punished for the attack that was not entirely his fault.
Gareth on the other hand blamed himself and began to restrict the boy's interaction with pokemon. At first Kael was extremely upset with his father, and argued with the man frequently. Yet eventually the child saw that his limited involvement with the ranch's pokemon was as much for his father's well being as his own, so the boy accepted this and searched for another hobby. At first his days were spent listlessly, but eventually Kael found something new and just as interesting to occupy his time. Writing. The youngster found that he rather enjoyed writing stories and began to spend nearly all of his time reading and writing.
Eventually the boy grew to decide that he wanted to be a writer as his profession. Gareth supported this because he saw the job as one that would be safe for the boy. Kael could just sit quietly at home each day and write about whatever he wanted to. Hanna supported the choice because she saw that it was the one thing that the child was truly passionate about, and the woman saw that as a great reason for the hobby to become a lifestyle. As the boy grew he came to realize that his writing was not up to par with that of those he admired, or even those that he thought were passable.
This extremely alarmed the boy. What did they have that he did not? Was it simply they were older and thus wiser? No, that couldn't be it because most of them started to publish very young plus he knew of many barely older than he that were writing on a level that he could only imagine. After days of pondering the young teen realized what it was that he lacked. Experience. Kael had only left the ranch the time he'd been hospitalized. All those writers that he admired had left home young and traveled much of the world, learning from the environment and the pokemon they saw on their travels. Living a secluded life on a breeder ranch would do the teen no good.
So Kael decided to go on a journey himself, so that he too could become a great writer. Perhaps he could even gain another passion while he explored the world. When the young teenager told his father of his goal Gareth said no immediately. The boy was too young, and the world was much too vile for a child so innocent. At first the teenager protested vehemently, saying that it was his duty as a writer to learn more about the world that he inhabited. Then Hanna agreed with Gareth saying that traveling alone at such a tender age was a mistake and Kael was likely to get hurt if he left home now. This cooled the teen's temper and made him agree. He planned to travel, but if he did so now it would have adverse affects on him.
So for the years till his seventeenth birthday Kael studied about traveling. He learned what types of berries were safe to eat, what type of pokemon were likely to attack humans, and many other random and useful tips. Gareth knew his son still dreamed of traveling Johto, but had no intention of letting Lenne's baby boy be soiled by the world that was so dirty. When finally Kael turned seventeen he told his father of his plans, even though he knew that Gareth already was aware of them. The man was more declined the boy's right to travel. This time Hanna was on Kael's side saying that he was intelligent, mature and level headed and could take care of himself. Still Gareth said no, he refused to let his son run off into the world at such an age.
For two months father and son argued about Kael's plans to leave the safety of the ranch. The boy did not want to leave without his father's permission, but was well aware of his chances of getting said permission. So one night Kael decided to take another route to get what he want. He approached Gareth and said, "It is only ten more months until I'm legally an adult. If you do not let me leave then once I am gone I promise I will only visit you once you're on your death bed." This was no idle threat and Gareth knew it. So two days later the man gave his son some traveling equipment and some cash, saying that it was now his job to make himself a successful trainer. With that father and son parted ways.
